Supercomputers are playing a vital role in the modernization of humanity. Since the invention of the first computer, we have progressed in the right direction. Today, we have supercomputers which can process calculations with unbelievable speed. They are being used in almost every field to outclass the competitors.
TOP500, the organization responsible for providing the Top 500 rankings of the supercomputer revealed their rankings last year. Since 2012, it’s the first time that the United States has the world’s fastest supercomputer.
China still leads the TOP500 ranking by holding the most number of fastest machines. They currently have 206 fastest supercomputers out of top 500 of the planet. The United States holds 124 and Japan comes in third with 36 machines on the list.
Here, we are going to discuss the top 5 supercomputers of the world, their ability to calculate per second and their specifications.
This beast with unbelievable speed is located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The machine has the ability to make 200 quadrillion calculations in one second. To make it understandable for you, it is one million times faster than the fastest laptop on this planet.
The machine has 2,285,544 cores with the top speed of 122.3 petaflops. What’s the purpose of setting up this machine? It is supposed to increase our comprehension of diseases. The machine is sixty percent faster than the second fastest supercomputer.
The machine, which ruled the world for two years as the fastest supercomputer of the world from 2016 to 2018! Sunway TaihuLight is located at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi.
The machine has the ability to perform 93000 trillion calculations in just one second. It has 10,649,600 cores with the top speed of 93 petaflops.
Another IBM beauty! The machine has 1,572,480 cores with the top speed of 71.6 petaflops. It is located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
The machine is set up to simulate the capabilities of nuclear weapons. The machine entered in TOP500 list in June 2018. With two machines in the top 5 supercomputers, IBM is definitely leading the supercomputers world.
Tianhe-2 is also as called Milky-Way-2. It remained the planet’s fastest machine for 3 years before Sunway TaihuLight took the first spot.
The machine has 4,981,760 cores with the top speed of 61.4 petaflops. The credit of building this giant supercomputing powerhouse goes to the China’s National University of Defense Technology.
AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI)
ABCI has 391,680 cores with the top speed of 19.9 petaflops. This is the first entry of any Japan’s supercomputer in the top 5 supercomputers. The machine is supposed to help on Artificial Intelligence.
This Japanese supercomputer is eighth most energy efficient supercomputer of the world as per Green500 rankings. The machine is located at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tokyo.
